As the saying goes "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
I know the word strategy can feel a bit boring and you might be thinking what does strategy actually mean when we're talking about this in the context of your personal brand, and do you really need to bother?
A personal brand strategy is your plan for building and managing your personal brand authentically. It should outline your goals, values target audience and messaging. It should also include a plan for creating and distributing your content both on and offline, engaging with your audience and measuring your results (the important bit).
In my workshops, I talk about goal setting without a plan as heading off on a long journey in your car to somewhere you've never been before without your sat nav loaded or a map to guide you! You're just heading off and you might get there, you might not, you might get stuck, you might get distracted, you take a few detours, go wrong, have no idea how long it will take you to get there and sometimes you even give up!
But when you have a strategic plan to follow, it all becomes so much clearer and easier.. but what are the key steps, I hear you say?
Well, here you go ...
Define your goals. What do you want to achieve with your personal brand? Do you want to attract new job opportunities, build relationships with potential clients, or establish yourself as an expert in your field? Once you know your goals, you can develop a strategy to achieve them.
Identify your target audience. Who are you trying to reach with your personal brand? Once you know your target audience, you can tailor your messaging and content to appeal to them.
Develop a unique value proposition. What makes you unique and different from other people in your field? Your unique value proposition is what will set you apart and attract people to your brand.
Create and distribute content. One of the best ways to build your personal brand is to create and distribute valuable content. This could include blog posts, articles, videos, or even just interesting insights and perspectives. When you share high-quality content, you position yourself as an expert in your field and build trust with your audience.
Engage with your audience. LinkedIn is a social platform, so it's important to engage with others here - don't post and ghost! This means liking and commenting on other people's posts, sharing their content, and participating in groups and discussions. When you engage with others, you build relationships and increase your visibility on the platform.
Measure your results. It's sooooooo important to track your progress and measure the results of your personal branding efforts. This will help you to see what's working and what's not, so that you can make adjustments to your strategy as needed.
Oh and please, please, please, be authentic. People can spot a fake from a mile away, so be yourself and let your personality shine through in your content and interactions. Building a personal brand is about being YOU, its not about building a fake persona!
